The source question is not “Are there two invoices?”
Carriers may issue a corrected invoice and reversing credit rather than editing an original bill. Two positive invoice numbers for one shipment do not automatically indicate two valid liabilities. A credit merely promised or issued is not proof it reached the customer's ledger.
Review shipment identity, governing rate authority, invoice lineage, actual payments, posted credits and previous auditor findings before assigning a discrepancy.
Illustrative credit-and-rebill trail
Fictional figures, not a RETALLY customer result. Assume the following documents concern a single valid transportation movement:
| Document | Example amount | Buyer verification |
|---|---|---|
| Original invoice | +$1,200 billed | Was it approved or paid? |
| Reversing credit memo | −$1,200 credit | Was it actually applied and linked to the original? |
| Corrected invoice | +$1,140 rebill | Does the corrected amount match governing terms? |
If the original credit is fully applied, no further adjustments exist, and the corrected charge is valid, the hypothetical net billed charge is $1,140. That is not a $1,200 recovery. If the credit is still pending, missing or reversed, do not treat it as realized value.

- ☐ Match shipment, PRO/BOL, legal entity, carrier, currency and service.
- ☐ Identify contract, rate version, service date and amendments.
- ☐ Link original invoice to exact credit memo and corrected bill.
- ☐ Resolve full versus partial reversal and any legitimate added service.
- ☐ Reconcile actual payments, posted credits, refunds and later reversals.
- ☐ Subtract previously known findings and incumbent auditor recoveries.
- ☐ Record reviewer and disposition: corrected / open credit / probable duplicate / unresolved.

Red flags worth investigating, not automatically disputing
- Both original and rebill remain economically open without a confirmed offset.
- A credit memo references a different customer, invoice or shipment.
- Only a carrier email—not the buyer's ledger—reports the correction.
- A partial credit is subtracted in full or applied to multiple invoices.
- An existing auditor or buyer AP team has already accounted for the same correction.
- A legitimate second leg or service is mistakenly merged into a duplicate.
A suspected discrepancy needs review. A supported finding is separate from a customer-authorized carrier dispute, and both are separate from a realized refund or credit.
Credit and rebill FAQ
Do two invoices for one shipment prove double billing?
No. Check whether a reversing credit and corrected bill validly replace the original, and whether there are separate supported services.
Is an issued credit already money recovered?
An issued credit alone does not prove settlement. Verify actual application, refund or eligible realized value under the signed agreement, including reversals.
What if our existing audit provider already found the same issue?
Previously identified findings, open disputes and credits must be excluded from any claimed net-new recovery opportunity.
